BIBIANA is the seat of the IBBY Slovak Section (International Board on Books for Young People, a non-governmental organization of UNESCO). Its activities are targeted at reading promotion and support of the children’s book production and distribution by organizing literary events, special seminars, book competitions, etc.
The IBBY Slovak Section submits Slovak nominees for the international awards in area of children’s literature:
- IBBY Honour List, that is given to a writer, an illustrator and a translator for an
outstanding work for children and youth published in last period. The proposals for granting the diploma
are submitted by the IBBY national sections in two-year intervals;
- Hans Christian Andersen Award which is an evaluation of the author’s important
contribution to children’s literature. Proposals of the IBBY national sections are considered by an
international jury that selects a writer and an illustrators to be the winners of the H. C. Andersen
Medal and, exceptionally, also of the Honour Diploma.
Moreover, the IBBY Slovak Section grants the national awards to children’s literature creators:
- The Triple Rose Award to a writer for his achievements in literature for children and youth;
- Ľudovít Fulla Award to an illustrator for his achievements in book art for children and youth;
- Fraňo Kráľ Award had been granted in period 1965-1990 (as a common forerunner of
Ľudovít Fulla Award up to 1976 and The Triple Rose Award up to 1990) to Slovak writers and illustrators
for their achievements in children’s and juvenile literature;
- Plaque of Ľudmila Podjavorinská is a prize given to either Slovak or foreign individual,
group or institution who has significantly contributed to promotion of Slovak children’s literature abroad.
- The Slovak IBBY Section Award to the Best Adaptation of a Work of Literature is given at the international festival of radio plays for children and youth Prix Ex Aequo.
